Lucas completed his undergraduate degree in geography at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He graduated with distinction in April 2024 and is now a first year MSc student at the University of Calgary. In his undergraduate degree, Lucas focused on the hydrology and geomorphology of mountain streams in British Columbia, utilizing programs like R to analyze these features in greater detail.

Under the supervision of Dr. Brian Moorman, Lucas aims to further develop these skills analyzing permafrost thaw in Svalbard, Norway. A potential avenue for research includes using Machine Learning techniques to predict future areas susceptible to thaw slumps.

Lucas was born and raised in Calgary and has always loved winter weather and activities like snowshoeing. The opportunity to study in more detail a setting so different than that of his undergraduate degree is a primary driver of his research.
