Ariane Castagner (she/her) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University. She holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Ottawa where her research focused primarily on sedimentology and stratigraphy.
Ariane’s current research is in collaboration with the Northwest Territories Geological Survey and focuses on modeling the distribution and characteristics of excess ground ice in the Northwest Territories using data-driven and process-based methods. Her recent modeling work has aimed to maximize the value of existing geotechnical borehole datasets collected in the N.W.T. by pairing them with models to make estimates of excess ice content. Learning more about excess ice is important to climate change mitigation and adaptation as the thawing of permafrost and ground ice causes thaw subsidence and affects the stability of Northern infrastructure.
