The 2019 PermafrostNet AGM took place in Ottawa, but in 2020 we partnered with the Canadian Permafrost Association and went digital!
When was it?
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on November 16, 17 & 18, 2020. The meeting agenda is posted below.
Who was the Joint AGM for?
All CPA and NSERC PermafrostNet members and affiliates were invited to participate in the first joint virtual AGM, with the first day geared towards members of CPA. On Monday 16 November CPA members had a keynote on permafrost engineering and science, technical sessions, and the CPA business meeting was held in the last session of the day.
What sort of sessions and activities did the AGM have?
The meeting consisted of three technical sessions, including keynote presentations on permafrost engineering and science, and a CPA business meeting on Monday 16 November. On Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 November, CPA and NSERC PermafrostNet partnered to provide a program of keynote presentations, interactive activities, and breakout sessions to promote networking and smaller group discussions. The NSERC PermafrostNet meetings included student-led activities and equity, diversity and inclusion sessions in addition to the scientific and administrative meetings.

All sessions were held by videoconference using Zoom.

The event was hosted by NSERC PermafrostNet and the Canadian Permafrost Association (CPA).

What sort of sessions and activities did the AGM have?
- Keynotes (Presentations and panel sessions). Speakers included Ryley Beddoe.
- Policy and permafrost (Presentations and panel session). Hear from the people who are transforming permafrost knowledge into policies.
- International (Short presentations and breakout sessions). Hear from international leaders in permafrost science and have the opportunity to meet them in our breakout rooms for Q+As.
- Highly Qualified Personnel (Flash Presentations). Meet our graduate students as they introduce their research projects in 2 minutes or under.
- Infrastructure (Presentations). Learn more about the pressing questions at the intersection of infrastructure and permafrost research.
- Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (Presentations and interactive sessions). In these session the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee introduced themselves and shared the progress so far, while encouraging participation from the network.
- Data (Presentation and discussion). Learn more about how NSERC PermafrostNet is supporting access and handling for permafrost data, and share your perspective.
- Networking and socializing sessions Before the opening session each day, the Zoom meeting was open for 30 minutes to provide time to meet colleagues or make new friends. On Tuesday 17 November at 16:30 ET we invited you to join us for a virtual networking session.
